헨리 하이드 미하원 국제위원장이 이상훈(李相薰) 대한민국재향군인회장 앞으로 맥아더 장군 동상 보존과 한·미동맹 강화 의지에 대한 감사답신을 보내왔다고 향군이 밝혔다.

지난 9일 이상훈 향군회장 앞으로 보낸 이 서한에서 하이드 위원장은 "맥아더 장군이 주도한 인천상륙 작전의 역사적 중요성에 대한 회장님의 인식과 맥아더 장군 동상을  지키기 위한 대한 민국 재향군인회의 노력에 대하여 미 하원 국제관계위원회 의원들은 매우 감사하게 생각하고 있다"고 전했다.

그는 또 "한·미 동맹에 대한 지지에 감사하며, 대한민국 재향군인회가 계속해서 자유 민주주의를 결연히 지키고, 한·미  양국 간의 관계가 지속적으로 번영하기를 진심으로 희망한다"고 밝혔다.

한편 이상훈 재향군인회장은 지난 9월 하이드 위원장 앞으로“대한민국 국민은 맥아더 장군과 유엔군의 숭고한 넋을 영원히 간직하고, 향군 회원들과 공산침략자들에 맞서 미군과 함께 참전했던 군 원로들은 강력한 한미동맹의 상징의 하나인 맥아더 장군 동상을 지키기 위해 모든 노력을 다 기울일 것”이라는 내용의 서신을 보낸 바 있다.

인천 자유공원에 위치한 맥아더 장군 동상 보호에 대한 회장님의 관심에 감사 드립니다.

1950년 9월 15일 맥아더 장군이 주도한 인천상륙 작전의 역사적 중요성에 대한 회장님의 인식과 맥아더 장군 동상을  지키기 위한 대한 민국 재향군인회의 노력에 대하여 미 하원 국제관계위원회 의원들은 매우 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.

지난 1950년부터 53년까지의 한국전쟁기간 중 한국군 장병들이 보여준 용감성과 결의를 현재도 많은 미국인들은 기억하고 있습니다. 대한  민국 재향군인회가 맥아더 장군 동상이 지닌 상징적인 중요성에 대하여 우리와 견해를 같이하고 있으며 대부분의 한국 국민들은 한·미  양국이 건국 과정에서 소중히 간직했던 자유 민주주의 가치에 대하여 미국 국민들과 견해를 같이하고 있다는 사실을 알고 마음 든든하게  생각합니다.

한·미 동맹에 대한 회장님의 지지에 대하여 대단히 감사 드립니다. 본인은 대한민국 재향군인회가 계속해서 자유 민주주의를 결연히 지키고, 한·미  양국 간의 관계가 지속적으로 번영하기를 진심으로 희망합니다.

Dear General Lee: 
Thank you for sharing your concern regarding the preservation of the statue of General MacArthur at Inchon Liberty Park. Your understanding of the historical significance of General MacArthur's Inchon Landing on September 15, 1950 and the efforts by the Republic of Korea's Veterans Association to preserve the statue are much appreciated by Members of the Committee on International Relations of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bravery and determination of the soldiers of the Republic of Korea(ROK) between the years 1950 to 1953 are remembered by many Americans. It is reassuring to know that the Korean Veterans Association shares our views concerning the symbolic importance of the MacArthur statue and that much of the ROK populace shares with the American people the values of freedom and democracy that are enshrined in the founding of both of our nations.

I greatly appreciate your support for the U.S.-ROK alliance. I sincerely hope that the Korean Veterans Association continues to stand resolutely for freedom and democracy and that U.S.- ROK relations continue to flourish.
