이라크에서 우리의 임무가 성취될 때까지는 앞으로도 험난한 길이 계속될 것입니다. 전쟁이란 희생입니다. 테러와의 전쟁에서도 우리는 지극히 善한 남녀들을 잃었습니다. 여러분들도, 먼 나라의 자유를 지키기 위하여 이 땅을 떠났다가 다시 집으로 돌아오지 못한 전우들 학우들이 있을 것입니다. 사랑하는 사람을 잃고 슬퍼하는 유족들을 위하여 우리는 기도하고 있습니다. 우리는 그들을 우리 가슴 속에 품고, 전장에서 전사한 군인들, 해군, 공군, 해안방위군, 해병대 장병들을 기억하고 추모합니다.

 그렇게 전사한 영웅들중, 제프 스타란 이름의 해병대 상병이 있습니다. 그는 금년 초 테러리스트들과 라마디 전투에서 싸우다가 전사했습니다. 그가 전사한 후, 그의 노트북 컴퓨터에서 다음과 같은 편지가 발견되었습니다. 

 "당신이 지금 내 편지를 읽는다면, 저는 이라크에서 이미 전사하고 산 사람이 아닐 겁니다. 저는 죽는 걸 억울하게 생각하지 않습니다. 세상 사람들 모두가 죽어야 하는데, 그들중 단지 몇 명만이 자유와 같이 중요한 대의를 위해서 죽을 수 있습니다. 우리가 이 이라크에 왜 있는가, 이해하지 못하는 사람들도 있을 것입니다. 저는 그렇지 않습니다. 저는 이곳 사람들을 돕고, 이곳 사람들이 우리처럼 살 수 있게 하기 위하여 이곳에 있습니다. 폭군이나 악독한 독재자들에 대한 공포가 없는 세상에서 살 수 있게 하기 위하여 이곳에 있는 것입니다. 딴 사람들이 나의 자유를 지키기 위하여 죽어갔습니다. 이제는 제 차례입니다."

 Before our mission in Iraq is accomplished, there will be tough days ahead. A time of war is a time of sacrifice, and we've lost some very fine men and women in this war on terror. Many of you know comrades and classmates who left our shores to defend freedom and who did not live to make the journey home. We pray for the military families who mourn the loss of loves ones. We hold them in our hearts -- and we honor the memory of every fallen soldier, sailor, airman, Coast Guardsman, and Marine.

 One of those fallen heroes is a Marine Corporal named Jeff Starr, who was killed fighting the terrorists in Ramadi earlier this year. After he died, a letter was found on his laptop computer. Here's what he wrote, he said,

 "If you're reading this, then I've died in Iraq. I don't regret going. Everybody dies, but few get to do it for something as important as freedom. It may seem confusing why we are in Iraq, it's not to me. I'm here helping these people, so they can live the way we live. Not to have to worry about tyrants or vicious dictators. Others have died for my freedom, now this is my mark."
